the america project/the 51st (dream) state, the university of texas at austin, austin, tx (2006)
Community Liaison, City of Austin and The University of Texas at Austin
Artist Sekou Sundiata’s final, epic, multi-city, community-based residency and live performance about American citizenship in a post-9/11 world. The America Project was an iterative event that unfolded over several years; community members in Austin, Minneapolis, New York, and elsewhere convened in churches, synagogues, mosques, schools, community centers, and elsewhere to discuss the state of democracy in the 21st century. The 51st (Dream) State was the touring, multimedia performance inspired by these conversations, with poetry, dance, video installation, and live music.
Written and performed by Sekou Sundiata, in collaboration with the ensemble. Directed by Christopher McElroen. Presented at the Bass Concert Hall at the University of Texas at Austin.
